Is it necessary to remove all linoleum backing paper and adhesive before laying tile?

My guest bathroom had linoleum flooring. I will be replacing this with ceramic tiles. I have removed all the linoleum, but much of the backing paper and adhesive remains stuck to the wooden sub-floor. Is it necessary to remove absolutely all of this (via scraping) before laying cement board and setting tile? Or, because the cement board will be screwed to the floor joists, will the remaining adhesive / paper backing be okay to leave as-is?

it’s better if you do to make it as level as possible.it’s to late now,but you could have left it there and gone over it.once your done, you’ll need to install backer (concrete) board with backer board screws or galvanized roofing nails as well as backer board tape.note don’t use alternate nails or screws or tape they are made differently . backer board can be 1/4 inch. so no matter what anyone else says .don’t attach the backer board directly, you’ll need to put thinset under the board 1/4 inch thick its not to hold the board ,its to fill any air pockets. If you read the directions you’ll see that,if you don’t the backer board co. won’t warranty their product. nails or screws need to be 8 to 10 in apart through out the board .some backer boards come with a nail pattern to follow.leave a 1/8 in gap between the staggered backer board sheets fill and tape.make sure you don’t mix to much thinset you cant add water and remix, mix smaller batches that will last you about an hour. also if your going to use a porcelain tile for example there is a thinset for that.read the directions on the bag.

If you were to install the tile directly to the subfloor, yes, you would need to remove all adhesive. But, if you’re going to install the cement board, you really don’t need to remove anything further. Just install the board and the tile. Sounds like you’ve done some research on installing already. I think you can get this done and be fine.

it needs to be cleaned and removed for a level sub floor. If not you will have tile to crack on you.

yes it is Justin. the adhesive may prevent the tiles from being firmly planeted on your floors. but why retile in the first place. that is sooo expensive. why not just use tiles rugs or carpetry? there are so many varieties, there has to be one you like.

if there is a lawyer of tiles beneath the linolium, you could consider just regrouting the tiles too, to give your home that just done feel. see what your options are on these two sites
